Statement from BSF Programme Director Barry Watts, following Michael Gove’s announcement in the House of Commons:
We are deeply disappointed that the Building Schools for the Future Programme (BSF) in Bournemouth and Poole has been severely curtailed following Education Secretary Michael Gove’s announcement. The Department for Education (DfE) has issued a comprehensive list of all schools affected in each local authority. Bournemouth and Poole will lose funding to pay for new buildings at five of our schools and four are “for discussion”. We are currently awaiting details from the DfE about the timescale and process for the discussion about the funding for these four schools: our sample scheme, Ashdown Technology College and our three Academies, The Bourne Academy (Kings High School), St Aldhelm’s Academy (Rossmore Community College) and The Bishop of Winchester Academy.
The Government’s decision is a serious setback. However, both councils will continue to work together with the sponsors and the schools and on behalf of students, parents and teachers in making the strongest possible case to the DfE to retain these schools in the BSF Programme. Improving our schools is a key part of wider plans to transform the lives of young people in Bournemouth and Poole, especially in light of the considerable increases we are seeing in the school populations in both towns.
